What is a Certificate of Insurance?

A certificate of insurance is a document that provides evidence that insurance is in effect. It includes policy coverage information, such as the limits of liability, the policy period and a description of coverage.

Certificates of insurance are usually requested by municipalities, parties to lease or use agreements, or service providers who want to ensure that you have the appropriate insurance coverage in place for their protection. Alternatively, you may need to request a certificate of insurance from a vendor or contractor who is providing services to your parish or institution. For example, construction projects usually require that the contractor has workers' compensation and general liability coverage in the event the contractor's negligence causes injury to a third party.

A certificate of insurance is not to be mistaken for an insurance policy. A certificate of insurance does not serve to provide, endorse, amend, extend or alter in any way the terms of an insurance policy. Only an endorsement, rider or amendment to the policy can effect changes in coverage.
