Anointing of the Sick

Protocols as of May 29, 2021

When a priest is called upon to administer the Sacrament of the Sick, he should be certain to do so as safely as possible, taking into account the vulnerability of the patient as well as his own. Please see the December 22, 2021 updated guidance for additional recommendations.

  • When the Sacrament is administered to a patient in a care facility, all of the rules of that facility must be followed.
  • The priest may well decide that he should wear a mask.
  • He may decide that it is best to use a cotton swab to administer the Sacrament.
  • He may decide that it is best to keep the visit brief, especially in an unventilated area.
